Today, it is the 57th Anniversary of the Independence of the Kingdom of Cambodia from France. Cambodia was put under the French protectorate; partly based on the wishes of King Norodom to ask the French to intervene preventing Cambodia from being eaten by its two big neighbors: Siam and Annam.
Today, at 7:30 am, our King Sihamoni, Head of the Senate, Head of the Parliament, Head of the Government, high ranking officials, MPs, Senators, Ambassadors of the friendly countries, military and police Generals, governments’ officials, students; around 20,000 people, gathered at the Independence monument to celebrate the great day in history of the country. King Sihamoni spent all most one hour just to greet VIPs, before he light a flame to mark the anniversary. The flame lit by the king will be extinguished on Thursday afternoon.
I have followed this ceremony live via TVK in a restaurant during my breakfast. It is very well organized and I saw VIPs and dignitaries were waiting for the arrival of the King to kick off the official ceremony. They dress very nicely and in a very formal dress code. What impressed me the most was that MPs from all parties, ruling and opposition parties were standing side by side to greet and to be greeted by the King, a picture, which we could not imagine some years ago. The weather was also very nice; sunny, little cool breathing from the northeast, which provided best temperature we could have: about 21-22 degree. Students kept the balloons to be released at the end of the ceremony. It is one of the best time in modern history that we have peace all over the country, the country is in progress enjoying security and political stability, despite some challenges we are facing as people and nation. I am optimistic in the future of this country and its people.
I am leaving the restaurant now and will join the Friend Help Friend (FHF) saving group, which I am also a member, to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of its existence. The article on the FHF will be published in my next post.
