Public Figure vs Private Life

Yesterday during an inauguration ceremony of the National Olympic Committee’s building, PM announced that Kem Sokha has sex with 15 years old girl, two years ago. I read the article in the Cambodia Daily this morning and asked myself, why he needs to attack his opponents by using this kind of stuff? Is it important for the country? Why did not he reveal this accusation earlier, why now short before election? It will not be the last one since the election is more than one month away from now. I understand that during election time, politicians try to marginalize opponents by all means; starting from political platform to personal/private life. It happens not only in Cambodia, but in other developed democracy such as in the US, Italy, France etc. Former President Bill Clinton had an affair with Monica Lewinsky, so what? Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi had affairs after affairs with mistress, actress, with models; but so what? It is their private business.

As Cambodian, I think it has gone too far from a substance that a responsible PM should do. Provided that this issue would be “true”, though I have my big, big doubt; there are more political issues to be dealt with as a public figure of a country. To me:

  • It is a dirty trick and it is harmful for the society. Politicians or public figures should behave more civilized and should act as role model for the people
  • It sent a bad image of Cambodia abroad and creates bad precedents for ordinary people
  • While controlling the mass media, he can say what he wants against others. All the eleven TV stations here will broadcast his speech in full length one by one, from the afternoon untill late night. Since most Cambodians got information from TVs rather than radios or newspapers, he has super weapon in fighting his opponents
  •  It seems that PM has no idea of leading policies based election campaign and has not much confidence in winning election so easily.

As long as he/she is clean, capable, working hard to help the people and the country and the party has good strategies and political platform; I do not care about politician’s private life. It is his/her individual freedom. The national interest should be above personal interest. They are all just human being like you and me. They have love and hate like others do.
